Can you ever have too much protection when packing your bike?

The first time I traveled to Europe to race in 1989, I packed my bike in this big, blue soft case. Removed the seatpost, took off the wheels, stored them on the sides of the bag and done. Not much protection at all! I had a floor pump, tools, bike shoes and who know what else in there? I do remember that when I flew back, the bag was SO HEAVY, I could hardly lift it. I think I even packed a coo-coo clock from the Black Forest. No weight restrictions back then!
From there, I went to a Thule hard case. Removed the seatpost, wheels, pedals and took off the stem. Still took extra precautions by using pipe insulation around the frame.

With today’s integrated bar/stem combo, I am no longer able to use the hard case. Moved to the Scicon Aerocomfort 3.0. LOVE this case! Over the years, I have constantly be revising just how I pack the bike.

This is what I do.

I use the Scicon Aerocomfort Handlebar Shield too. The Black Inc. bar stem combo is rather expensive to replace!

I use foam padding to protect the rotors. These are ziptied in place.

Drop the wheels into wheel bags for that added protection!
